The Mechanism of Meaning: Shusaku Arakawa and Madeline Gins

Sezon Museum of Modern Art
Finished

Artists

Shusaku Arakawa, Madeline Gins
Born in Nagoya in 1936, Shusaku Arakawa abandoned his artistic career in Tokyo and moved to New York in 1961 to "go a little farther." Using Yoko Ono's studio as a base of operations, Arakawa met his partner, the poet Madeline Gins (1941-2014), while interacting with many artists, including Marcel Duchamp. The two worked on the question, "What is meaning?" The two artists worked on a thorough pursuit of this "meaning. Twenty-five years later, "Mechanism of Meaning" is an ongoing project. The total number of works is 127, including 81 large two-dimensional works, 44 drawings, as well as photographs and models.

This is an opportunity to take a look at a large series of works that can be called a lifework, and to go a little farther beyond the meaning of seeing.
