The Meiji, Taisho and Showa Eras: The Age of the Record and the Age of Yumeji - Sounds and Designs of Modern Japan that Attracted the Masses

Takehisa Yumeji Museum
Finished
The Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras, when the poet and painter Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934) was active, coincided with the period when records were accepted and flourished among the masses. Various sound sources such as popular songs, rakugo (comic storytelling), and speeches by politicians were recorded, and about 110 years have passed since records for listening to music and voice were manufactured and sold in Japan.

This exhibition introduces a selection of SP records that Takehisa listened to on phonographs during the Meiji, Taisho, and pre-WWII Showa periods, as well as his designs for music sheet cover illustrations and works depicting the customs of the times.

The exhibition will showcase rare records and materials, mainly from the collection of Toru Yasutoshi, representative of the “Gramomo Club," and the footprints of Japanese modern art, especially music, as seen through the eyes of Yumeji Takehisa, a symbol of Taisho Romanticism.
