The Mitsumasa Takano Collection: Discovered Japanese Landscapes

Nihombashi Takashimaya 8F Hall
Finished
The Meiji period marked the beginning of Japan's modern era. Japan experienced a great transformation as it welcomed a variety of cultures and people from Western countries. Foreign artists who visited Japan were interested in Japanese culture and nature, which were different from those of the West, and painted them. Japanese painters also used new techniques they learned from Westerners to depict the landscape and lifestyle of their own country.

Many of these works were sought after by foreigners and went abroad, where they lay dormant for many years. All of the works in this exhibition were collected by collector Mitsumasa Takano, who spent half his life overseas and returned to Japan. This unparalleled collection preserves valuable scenes of Meiji-era Japan that have now been lost.
