The Other Nihonga

Saitou Museum
Finished
In recent years, there has been a modest boom in Nanga (Southern Painting). In addition to a deep admiration for culture, people's envy of the ideal life of literati artists, who lived in remote valleys enjoying flowers, birds, and scenery, reading books, and drinking sake with like-minded people, may be intensified by the fact that modern society has undergone a great deal of change.

This style of painting, which originated in China's Southern Song Dynasty, attracted professional painters and haiku poets such as Taiga Ike and Yosa Buson in Japan. Nanga gradually declined in popularity during the Meiji period (1868-1912) due to the influence of Western paintings, but twith the emergence of Tessai Tomioka Western-style painters also began to enjoy Nanga.

In this modern era, one of the artists who devoted himself to the popularization of nanga was Suiun Komuro (1874-1945). He also established the Nanga Appreciation Society, published the journal "Nanga Kankan Sho," and held Nanga workshops throughout the country.

This exhibition focuses on the works of Komuro from the Meiji to Showa periods, as well as those of Ikegami (1874-1944), who lived in the same era as Komuro and worked hard for the continuation and revival of flower-and-bird painting.
