The Owari Tokugawa Vassals

The Tokugawa Art Museum
Finished
The Owari Tokugawa family had about 25,000 vassals by the middle of the Edo period. They were composed of people of various origins and backgrounds, including those who belonged to the Owari Tokugawa family but were contracted to do official work for the shogunate because of their ties to Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun, and those who had a history as local warriors before the Owari clan was established. In addition, throughout the Edo period, there were people who rose to prominence through their skills in the martial arts, or who were involved in compiling records and local histories, or who possessed superior skills under the control of the Owari Tokugawa family. This exhibition explores the realities of the Owari Tokugawa Vassals, who came from a variety of origins and backgrounds, through historical documents. Owari Vassal Sugoroku, By Tokugawa Keihan (13th of the Owari family), Edo period, 19th century
