Hiroshige Utagawa
The development of the transportation network during the Edo period (1603-1867), including the Five Routes and other highways, rivers, lakes, and marshes, and water transportation that carried large amounts of cargo by boat, was an essential element in the cultural and economic development of the Edo period. During the 264 years of the Edo shogunate, Hiroshige Utagawa and other ukiyo-e artists depicted various “paths" connecting people and things in their work.
