The new woodblock print is a modern interpretation of traditional ukiyo-e woodblock printing techniques, with a strong emphasis on artistic expression. Leading the way in popularizing this art form was publisher Shozaburo Watanabe (1885-1962).
Since the Meiji era, woodblock printing technology has been in decline due to the introduction of Western photography and printing techniques. However, Watanabe, leveraging the traditional division of labor among artists, carvers, and printers, collaborated with foreign artists visiting Japan and emerging local talents to create new woodblock prints.
These new prints, which were meticulously crafted and characterized by beautiful colors, captivated audiences both domestically and internationally. Despite a setback due to the unfortunate disruption caused by war, interest has been resurgent in recent years, with its popularity once again on the rise. Particularly famous is the story of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who was fascinated by and collected these prints.
This exhibition, with the full cooperation of Watanabe Woodblock Print Gallery, will showcase the charm of new woodblock prints, especially through rare first edition prints, and trace the path of Shozaburo Watanabe's endeavors. On display will be refreshing expressions imbued with a modern spirit, including the beautiful portraits by Shinsui Ito, landscape paintings by Hasui Kawase Hasui, flower and bird paintings by Shoson Ohara, and actor prints by Shunsen Natori.
