Hideo Hagiwara
Iris is the rainbow goddess in Greek mythology. Like the rainbow that bridges the heavens and earth, Iris serves as a messenger to Hera, the wife of Zeus, the ruler of the sky, as well as to Zeus. Hideo Hagiwara created a work entitled "Rainbow Iris" in 1959 and in 1965, a series of paintings titled "Greek Mythology" using traditional Ukiyoe techniques. In Hagiwara's works, gods and goddesses are depicted in a humorous and humanistic manner.
