The Tokugawa Art Museum Collection - Treasures of the Owari Tokugawa Family

Abeno Harukas Art Museum
Finished
The Owari Tokugawa family, founded by Yoshinao, the ninth son of Tokugawa Ieyasu (1600-1650), was a major daimyo with Nagoya Castle as its residence and was counted as one of the three great families along with the Kii Tokugawa family and the Mito Tokugawa family. The Tokugawa Art Museum possesses the daimyo's equipment passed down through the Owari Tokugawa family, with its collection totaling over ten thousand items, including items such as Tokugawa Ieyasu's heirloom "Suruga Gobunbutsu" and the beloved items of successive lords and their wives.

This exhibition will introduce the history and splendid daimyo culture of the Owari Tokugawa family through various masterpieces such as armor, swords, tea utensils, incense utensils, Noh props, wedding furnishings, and paintings.

Representative masterpieces of Japan, such as the National Treasure "The Tale of Genji Scroll," which is the oldest extant Genji-e, and the National Treasure "Hatsune no Chodo," brought by Chiyo-hime, the eldest daughter of the third shogun Iemitsu, when she married into the Owari Tokugawa family, will also be specially exhibited as the essence of the museum's collection.
