The Ultimate in Finely Detailed Crafts

Kiyomizu Sannenzaka Museum
Finished
The Edo and Meiji periods in Japan are said to have been a time when handicrafts such as metalwork, lacquer, and sculpture reached their technical and artistic pinnacle. During the peaceful and warless Edo period, daimyo (feudal lords) and townspeople began to elaborate on their personal furnishings and sword fittings, leading to the emergence of craftsmen who created diverse and gorgeous workmanship and the development of techniques. In addition to the elaborate and realistic miniature crafts, which were made much smaller than their original size, the craftsmen produced a wide variety of crafts and developed their skills, even undergoing repeated bans on luxuries.

This exhibition features some of the most detailed and exquisite works in the museum's collection.
