Nanpo Ota
If you are familiar with Edo culture, you may have heard the name of the kyoka master Ota Nanpo (1749-1823), who was a central figure in the publishing world of the flourishing Edo period (1603-1868).
Born into a low-ranking samurai family in Edo, Nanpo served the Shogunate in various ways throughout his life. Despite his low status, he was promoted on the basis of his knowledge and skills and was highly regarded in his duties. He recorded everything he saw and heard, from events and rumors to historical records, and without Nanpo's records, the history of ukiyo-e and Edo literature would have been lost. Visitors are invited to explore the world of Edo and rethink the meaning of knowledge.
