At MEDEL GALLERY SHU, from January 17 to 29, we will hold a sketch exhibition showcasing the creative process behind the “Strandbeest,” invented by the Dutch artist Theo Jansen.
Theo Jansen is a Dutch artist who has created unique art by leveraging his experience in physics. His Strandbeest series is a remarkable representation of life’s evolution and the forces of nature. His art is based on the theme of recreating the laws of life and pursuing its evolutionary process.
Theo Jansen’s exploration began in the late 1980s when he presented “Lineamentum”, a program simulating the movement of creatures on computers. From 1990, he began working on the creation of Strandbeest, fictional creatures powered by wind that walk along sandy beaches. Meaning “beach creatures” in Dutch, these Beests have evolved through repeated experimentation and iterations to their current forms.
Today, they have been exhibited in art museums around the world. This exhibition offers a glimpse into Theo Jansen’s creative process of bringing his unique imaginary creatures to life through the sketches of Strandbeest.
