Shueisha Co., Ltd. launched a new project, "Shueisha Manga Art Heritage," in March 2021 with the vision of "making manga art that should be handed down from generation to generation.
"The Millennium" series is based on the concept of "passing on manga to the next 1,000 years," and following the first work, “Bleach / Boy in Black" by Tite Kubo, which was unveiled in April 2022, “Bleach / Moon Fang Unity" will be exhibited at Art On Paper (New York) for the first time in the world.
The Millennium series is made of Mino paper, which has a 1,300-year-old tradition, and each sheet is handmade by artisans in Gifu, Japan, specifically for use in manga art. The artwork is printed on this Japanese paper using collotype printing. Currently, there is only one company in the world that can do this large-format color printing. The Kyoto studio, which has mainly produced reproductions of national treasures and important cultural properties, attempted to reproduce the unique "black" of Tite Kubo drawings.
At the SRR Project Space, framed versions of the first “Bleach / Boy in Black" and the second “Bleach / Moon Fang Unity" will be exhibited side by side. In addition, a collaboration movie with Biwa Satsuma (Japanese lute) by Tomoyoshi Tsurushin will be screened.
The Asakusa warehouse built in the first year of the Meiji era (1868) was the setting for the first movie. The second movie was shot at Jindaiji Temple (Chofu, Tokyo), where the warehouse is scheduled to be relocated.
