Chinese ceramics are a treasure of the world. Among them, beautiful pieces from the Guan kilns are the best. Toru Toguri (1926-2007), the founder of the museum, collected a great deal of Japanese porcelain, including Imariyaki and Nabeshima porcelain, but he also had a keen interest in Chinese ceramics.
Among the examples from the Jingdezhen Guan kilns, Toguri was particularly fond of blue and white porcelain. Seika is a technique of underglaze coloring with cobalt pigment. It was established in the Jingdezhen kilns in the 14th century, the late Yuan dynasty, and was continued in the Guan kilns that began in the early Ming dynasty. The clean blue color against the beautiful white ground, the neat brush strokes, and the magnificent and graceful pattern compositions that reflect the taste of the times, all suggest that the artists must have been impressed by the completed appearance of this technique.
This exhibition will display for the first time in 15 years approximately 80 pieces of Chinese ceramics, including blue and white wares from the Jingdezhen Guan ware of the early Ming dynasty in the museum collection.
