Tokihiro Sato "Hachinohe Magic Lantern"

Hachinohe Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Tokihiro Sato
The exhibition consists mainly of works set in Hachinohe that Tokihiro Sato photographed over six years. The "Magic Lantern" series was inspired by the device that uses candle or lamp light and a lens to project a picture on glass. While following the long-exposure photographic technique of the past, the new technique of layering scenes of festivals, fishing ports, scenic spots, etc., evokes the latent historical and cultural consciousness of the region in this series of works. Also to be added are the "Camera Lucida" series, which uses the structure of an optical device to project the view in front onto the viewer's hand, and the "An Hour Exposure" series, in which the photographer holds the shutter open for an hour. The exhibition will also include a project to experience the "Rear Car Mera," a "camera obscura" on the back of a truck, created by Sato. In addition, a photography exhibition featuring Hachinohe's scenery by Hachinohe citizens will be held at the same time.
