Toru Ishii, Piczo
As symbolized by the title, which combines the country codes "81" for Japan, where Toru Ishii lives, and "44” for the UK, where Piczo lives, this exhibition will attempt to connect Japan and London from a new perspective.

Ishii, who is based in Tokyo, has been creating works using the traditional technique of yuzen dyeing. His works have attracted attention for their subtlety and expressiveness, as he uses the vividly colored technique of yuzen to capture contemporary social events and urban landscapes, attempting to both critique contemporary art and innovate traditional crafts.

On the other hand, as a photographer, Piczo has been incorporating diverse themes into his photographic works. Using a film camera, he graphically and pictorially depicts the beautiful moments of his time in a diary-like manner, and his photographic works have appealed to a wide range of audiences not only in the field of photography but also in advertising and film.

In the "8144" exhibition, Ishii will present "Photo Yuzen," a new series of works that fuse Piczo's photographs with his yuzen. This new series uses two main yuzen techniques, “itome yuzen" and “kata yuzen." The most important point is that the process of yuzen, which is not revealed in the original yuzen process, is left as an element of the work.

In “itome yuzen," a special paste called “itome nori" is used to distinguish the areas to be dyed. In this work, pigments and acrylics are used instead of glue.

In “kata yuzen," patterns are created using stencils. Usually, katagami is cut out from special paper called shibu-shi, but this work uses a variety of materials, including Japanese paper, paper from around the world, and dyed origami. This takes a new approach to traditional kata-yuzen.

In addition, elements of "extended interpretation," "remixing," and "sampling" are incorporated as modern effects. “Photo Yuzen" is a back-and-forth between digital and analog, an interplay between the two artists' different expressive methods, and a new interpretation of an idea for the traditional technique.

The exhibition will travel to Kyoto in June 2023, and then to London. In Kyoto, the works will resonate with the landscape and traditional culture of the ancient capital, while in London they will reflect the environment and culture in which Piczo works, and will shine brightly in a new context.
