Hiroshige Utagawa
"Kamigata" refers to the direction or region where the Emperor (Kami) resides. It mainly refers to the areas of Gokaido, including Kyoto and Osaka, which are Yamashiro Province, Izumi Province, Kawachi Province, Settsu Province, and Yamato Province. In a broader sense, it also includes Harima Province, Tango Province, and Omi Province.

During the Tokugawa era, the political center shifted from Kyoto to Edo. However, Kyoto, a city that prospered through the efforts of the townspeople while preserving ancient elegance, continued to exert significant influence on culture and economy. Osaka developed significantly as a commercial city where agricultural and marine products from across the country gathered due to water transportation. As interest in travel increased in the mid-Edo period, the Ukita region, which could be easily visited with a short detour from Ise Jingu, also became popular as a tourist destination. Its prosperity is depicted in illustrated guidebooks that introduce famous places, specialties, and historical sites with abundant illustrations, as well as in ukiyo-e woodblock prints.

This exhibition will introduce the highlights of Kamigata's famous places, such as "Kyoto Meisho-no-Uchi" and "Naniwa Meisho Zue" created by Hiroshige Utagawa, and the "Omi Hakkei" set against the background of the "Shoushou Hakkei" views.
