Since its opening in 1952, the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo, has continued to lead the Japanese art world. This exhibition traces the trajectory of Japanese and Western art in the 20th century through the museum's collection of Western-style paintings and sculptures. Since the Meiji period (1868-1912), new forms of artistic expression have been developed in Japan, along with the social changes brought about by modernization and Westernization. This exhibition provides an overview of the Meiji period (1868-1912), a period of popularization of art, the Taisho period (1912-1926), a period when the individualistic expression was emphasized, the pre-WWII Showa period (1926-1945) when freedom and oppression were at odds, and the postwar period when diversity in expression was increasing. In addition, the exhibition also introduces modern Western art, which is essential to the development of modern Japanese art.
