Since fiscal year 2007, the Toyokawa City Sakuragaoka Museum has been conducting a project to collect and exhibit experiential paintings depicting the Toyokawa Naval Arsenal. Many people have contributed their work to this project. Among them, Sadao Takeo is a particularly notable contributor. Takeo has said, "It is my mission to donate one painting to the Sakuragaoka Museum each year," and he has faithfully depicted the arsenal where he spent his time as a mobilized student and donated a painting every year.
This exhibition displays all of Takeo's experiential paintings together. His works not only convey the devastation of the air raids but also depict the daily life at the arsenal before it was destroyed by war. The everyday scenes before the air raids, which are difficult to capture in photographs due to the lack of awareness of their significance and value at the time, are invaluable visual records that only experiential paintings, which allow us to revisit the past, can provide.
