Traveling Otsu-e Exhibition - Cute! Fun! Popular Souvenirs of the Edo People

Nakagawa-machi Bato Hiroshige Museum of Art
Finished
Otsu-e, sold in the Otsu area on the Tokaido Highway, were popular as souvenirs among travelers and were as familiar as ukiyo-e to the common people of the Edo period. After the Meiji period (1868-1912), Otsu-e became the subject of collection by domestic and foreign painters and celebrities. The charming and humorous depictions of beautiful women, demons, animals, and other characters are all enjoyable even in the modern age.
