Treasures of Tōdaiji’s Omizutori Ritual

Nara National Museum
Finished
Omizutori is a Buddhist ritual held in Nigatsudo Hall of Todaiji Temple. The purpose of the ritual is to repent for sins and transgressions before the Buddha. During this period, priests who have purified their bodies and minds chant and pray for peace and tranquility in the world in front of the eleven-faced Kannon.

The Omizutori (Shunikai) ceremony has been continuously practiced for 1,271 years since the first performance of the Juichimen Repentance Ceremony by Jichu, a priest of Todaiji Temple, in 752. The long history of Todaiji Temple is engraved in this ceremony.

This exhibition is an annual event held in conjunction with the annual Omizutori ceremony at Todaiji Temple. The exhibition will display the ritual implements used in the ritual, as well as paintings, old documents, and excavated artifacts that convey the history and traditions, in the hope that they will help visitors deepen their understanding of Omizutori.
