Artists

Taikan Yokoyama, Togyu Okumura, Ryusei Kishida, Yasuo Kazuki et al.
Native to Japan, the tsubaki (camellia) was used as a motif in paintings and crafts by the Rimpa school and many other artists during the Edo period (1603-1868). In the modern era, many artists in the fields of Japanese painting, Western painting, and crafts expressed the camellia, resulting in the creation of numerous masterpieces.

This exhibition features works with camellia motifs from the collection of Aioi Nissay Dowa Insurance, known for its collection of camellia paintings, including Rimpa school craft works represented by Korin Ogata, Japanese paintings by Taikan Yokoyama and Togyu Okumura, and Western paintings by Ryusei Kishida and Yasuo Kazuki.

The area where the museum is located is known as the hiding place of Tenshin Okakura, who contributed to the development of modern art, as well as a place where tsubaki grow wild. The children's song poet Ujo Noguchi, also associated with Kitaibaraki, wrote a poem about camellias.
