After World War II, women who married soldiers who came to Japan and then moved to America were called "war brides," and their number is estimated to exceed 40,000.
Tsuneo Enari went to the United States in 1978 to interview these women and compiled their testimonies into a book titled "Hanayome no America" (Kodansha/Kodansha Bunko). Twenty years later, he interviewed them again and published "Hanayome no America Saigetsu no Fuukei 1978-1998" (Shueisha). And in 2022, he announced the publication of "Hanayome no America [Kanzenban]" (Ronsoisha).
In this exhibition, approximately 20 photographs selected from these three books will be displayed.
The focus will be on the strong will of these women, who broke away from the norms and thoughts of Japan at the time, overcame opposition from their surroundings, and pursued their love, pride, dreams, and desires. It will highlight how their feelings have been passed down across generations.
