Tsutomu Iwasaki was born in 1972 in Toyama Prefecture. He naturally gravitated towards the path of sculpture, having a father who was a traditional Inami carver known for his transom carvings. After graduating from the Sculpture Department of Musashino Art University in 1995, he apprenticed under glass and stainless steel sculptor Minami Tada for two years. Following this, he returned to Inami to train under his father for eight years before pursuing further expression independently. He established his studio, "Mokuhori Iwasaki," in Higashi Iwase, Toyama City. His single-block wooden sculptures, created with a commitment to traditional carving techniques while aiming for realism that surpasses reality through his imagination, have received high praise both domestically and internationally. In this exhibition, he will showcase his sculpture "Tenjin-sama (Statue of Sugawara no Michizane)," which vividly brings to life the image of historical figures or fictional motifs, delving into their backgrounds from sources such as paintings and literature, including "persimmon," "cherries," and "Japanese irises."
