Picture book artist Tsuu Fujieda passed away in mid-January 2026. After being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumour last spring, she quietly departed following approximately nine months of treatment and hospitalisation. She was 76 years old. This exhibition commemorates the artist by presenting, for the first time in one venue, original artwork from many of her published picture books (including “Lots of Good Things”, “When You Were Little”, and “Caterpillar, Caterpillar”, all published by Fukuinkan Shoten). Simultaneously, portraits of her taken in her sickbed by her husband, photographer ARAMASA Taku (b. 1936), are unveiled for the first time. According to ARAMASA the exhibition title ‘The Last Portrait’ carries a dual meaning. The vast number of portraits of Tsuu Fujieda taken on her hospital bed represent her final portraits as evidence of her life. Moreover, for ARAMASA himself, who has continued to photograph numerous portraits including those of Chinese-Japanese orphans and Japanese-Brazilian immigrants etc, this will also be his final work in portrait photography.
