Kuniyoshi Utagawa et al.
Kuniyoshi Utagawa was an ukiyoe artist active in the late Edo period (1603-1868), the same period as Hokusai and Hiroshige. He first came into the limelight with his samurai paintings depicting the heroes of Suikoden and was active in a variety of genres, including landscapes and caricatures. Kuniyoshi's works, with their eccentricity and fearlessness, have been popular among Edo-ites of the time and the younger generation today.

This exhibition focuses on Kuniyoshi's most famous works of brave warriors, amusing caricatures, and landscapes with a unique atmosphere influenced by Western painting.

This is the only exhibition of its kind held at the Akita Museum of Modern Art, featuring approximately 170 works that are a condensed version of Kuniyoshi's style.
