Ukiyo-e - The Mode of Edo Beauty and Culture

MOA Museum of Art
Finished
During the Edo period, as Edo grew into a major city, the flourishing economy gave rise to a vibrant merchant culture, and ukiyo-e, focusing on the concerns of the common people, saw remarkable development. Particularly, there was a keen interest in the costumes, postures, and appearances of women, leading to the popularity of bijin-ga, or pictures of beautiful women, featuring courtesans and ordinary townwomen as motifs. Renowned artists like Shunsho Katsukawa, who depicted elegant women with intricate details, and Utamaro Kitagawa, who created bijin okubi-e, or large head pictures of women's expressions filling the entire screen, were active during this period. In this exhibition, we will showcase both hand-painted and woodblock-printed bijin-ga works from our collection, along with screening original digital footage to showcase their charm.
