Interest in ukiyo-e has been on the rise this year, in part due to it being the subject of a period drama. Uemura Shōen in Kyoto and Kaburaki Kiyokata (1878-1972) in Tokyo established bijin-ga as an art form. As each pursued their personal aesthetic sensibilities in their work, bijin-ga blossomed. In recent years, people have become more and more interested in Edo publishing culture, particularly in ukiyo-e, an antecedent to bijin-ga. At the second venue, Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts & Culture, you can see more hand-painted ukiyo-e, genre paintings from Kyoto, and modern bijin-ga, all works from the Fukuda Collection. The spirited ukiyo-e images on show are rooted in music, dance, and the performing arts. With added context, we hope you will appreciate the charm of the ephemeral 'floating world'. Come and experience the elegance of over 200 images of beautiful women, brought together in the heart of Arashiyama at the height of the autumn foliage.
