This is an exhibition by two artists named Aoi with a keen interest in AI-assisted creation. The exhibition explores the future of inevitable job losses among creators due to AI proliferation and the essence of art as a craft beyond convenience and efficiency. It delves into the history of technology adoption and unemployment, and the evolution of the activities of Aoi Uni and Aoi Nanase. Uni Aoi’s medium is abstract expressionist painting, where character designs generated by AI are transferred onto canvas and then augmented with acrylic paint. She is heavily influenced by character design in anime and games, which he also enjoys as a hobby, but in her artwork, she prefers abstract expression over character art. Abstract expressionist paintings can be challenging for those who cannot synesthetically sense the artist's vision through color and form. However, when abstract expression emerges against a figurative background, viewers can use the figurative elements as a clue to better understand the abstract expression. The AI-generated characters effectively serve as a background for Uni Aoi’s expression. Despite losing confidence, Aoi Nanase regained her belief that her hand-drawn, 90s-style character illustrations in color ink are worthy of being archived as part of Japanese art.
On the other hand, for Aoi Nanase, an illustrator, manga artist, and character designer for anime and games, characters are the primary focus of her work. She felt an immediate sense of crisis with the advent of AI and was one of the first to start working with AI-assisted drawing, a move that has garnered attention in recent years. The use of AI in creation has been controversial across all fields. However, as Nanase Aoi frequently emphasizes, AI will inevitably become an acknowledged tool in the industry.
This exhibition is an unexpected showcase, offering a panoramic view of the latest AI technologies, contemporary artistic styles, traditional hand-drawn techniques, and historical art forms.
