Unichi Hiratsuka (1895-1997, honorary citizen of Matsue City) was a printmaker from Matsue who pioneered the creative printmaking style, in which the entire printmaking process is done by one person.
Using historical buildings and landscapes as motifs, Hiratsuka produced works full of power and style, known as black-and-white prints. Among his landscapes are "Matsue Castle Keep" and “Yakumo Koizumi's Former Residence, Matsue," which depict scenes from Hiratsuka's hometown of Matsue. After moving to the U.S. at the age of 67, Hiratsuka produced the "One Hundred Nudes" series and several large works with American landscapes as subjects.
This exhibition will focus on Hiratsuka's "landscape paintings,” featuring works depicting landscapes of Matsue and the United States, as well as works combining portraits and poetry, to explore some aspects of his painting career.
