Urban Rhythm Paris-Tokyo

This project is an exhibition on the theme of “everyday life,” organized by URBAN RHYTHM PARIS - TOKYO, a student organisation founded by a Japanese international student in Paris. In creating the works, the participants focused on places that play similar roles in urban life in Paris and Tokyo, such as stations, university cafeterias, parks, and restaurants. Observing these two capitals from the perspective of people who actually live there, the exhibition expresses the rhythms, atmospheres, and flows of people that run through them, through media such as photography, sound, and poetry.

The project is diverse not only in its forms of expression, but also in the themes it addresses. Documentary elements that quietly observe everyday urban life coexist with poetic elements rooted in personal memories and sensations. For example, while the work on Shinjuku Station focuses on observations of the movement of people and pigeons, the work on Otemachi is based on the creator’s own memories of coming to Tokyo for university entrance exams. Rather than simply comparing Tokyo and Paris, the exhibition aims to create an experience in which the two cities seem to exist simultaneously within a single exhibition space. It seeks to create a space that is neither Tokyo nor Paris. In addition, this exhibition places importance not only on viewing the works, but also on the conversations that emerge among visitors, and between visitors and artists. Through the works and encounters in the venue, the project aims to offer visitors an experience in which they can pause and take a breath, as they recall their own experiences or feel the everyday life of a distant city closer to them. Through this project, we attempt to temporarily shorten the physical distance between Paris and Tokyo within the exhibition space, allowing the everyday lives of the two cities to coexist across two venues.
