Vernacular Humanism

Blue Front Shibaura
Ends Today
Maki and Associates Architects marks its 60th anniversary in April 2025. Since the 1960s, we have engaged the relationship between city and architecture, undertaking 145 projects in Japan and abroad. This exhibition draws upon the six-decade trajectory to reexamine what has been realized in society through architecture and urban planning, and to consider how this may extend into the years ahead.

The title “Vernacular Humanism” reflects the architectural philosophy cultivated over many years by our founder, Fumihiko Maki. It embodies an approach refined through six decades of work—one that understands architecture not as autonomous form, but as a discipline grounded in the scale of the people and in the patterns of everyday life, where living, gathering, and social relationships take place.

Comprising of models, panels, and video works, the exhibition presents perspectives on the role of architecture in society as discerned through our practice, including its dialogue with environment and with people. The venue, BLUE FRONT SHIBAURA TOWER S, designed by our office and completed in 2025, represents the most recent embodiment of our accumulated thoughts, ideas and technical investigations.

Tracing six decades of work with this project is not simply an act of retrospection, but an effort to understand the present as part of an ongoing inquiry, and to frame the present in anticipation of what follows.
