Wada Tozan Ⅰ―Master Craftsman of Hyogo

The Museum of Ceramic Art, Hyogo
Finished
The first generation Wada Tozan (1887–1967) was a renowned craftsperson in Amagasaki, Hyogo, active from the Taisho to Showa periods. Following a ceramic artist father, Tozan established the Kotoura Kiln in 1910. Tozan produced various types of ceramics, including white porcelain, underglaze blue, overglaze enamel, and gold brocade, often creating works that meticulously reproduced traditional Chinese ceramics and Kyo ware. The tea ceramics were highly regarded by cultural figures and businesspeople in the Hanshin area. In 1955, Tozan became the first ceramic artist to receive the Hyogo Culture Prize and contributed significantly to local culture as president of the Amagasaki Culture Association. This exhibition, with contributions from local museums and Tozan's relatives, showcases these works, highlighting vibrant overglaze enamel, gold decoration, and delicate line drawings, revealing exceptional craftspersonship.
