隙間 is pleased to present 「目を澄ます (To Sharpen the Eyes)」 by Waku Fukui.
Born in Tokyo in 1996, Waku Fukui began his training at Shimada Neon, one of Japan’s leading neon sign manufacturers. He later studied under David Ablon — a master neon fabricator known for producing works by Nam June Paik — during his time in New York. After returning to Japan, Fukui established the neon studio 「Gokou Neon Studio」 and later the artist-run space 「Gokou」. While rooted in neon-based expression, his activities span a wide range of disciplines and approaches.
Fukui’s practice engages with the materiality and form of neon light, creating pieces that reflect his own state at each moment. By combining neon tubes with metal, cloth, and everyday reflective materials, his works pursue a sculptural approach that gives physical presence to the “in-between” — the threshold where inorganic and organic qualities quietly intersect.
In 「目を澄ます (To Sharpen the Eyes)」, Fukui presents a new body of work created specifically for this exhibition. He allows the subtle movements of light and material to shape each piece: the heat and discharge of the neon tube, the trembling of particles, the slight vibrations of metal. Within darkness, these faint pulsations reveal shifting expressions moment by moment, allowing distinct forms and even narratives to arise within each viewer’s perception.
We invite you to experience this new approach to light in Fukui’s practice.
