Toyama is known as the "City of Glass," serving as a base for over 100 glass artists. The region is supported by initiatives such as the public institution Toyama Glass Institute, which offers Japan's first advanced glass education, and the Toyama Glass Studio, which assists glass artists in establishing their independence, thus promoting the development of glass crafts in the area.
This exhibition highlights four artists who are active both domestically and internationally and use Toyama as their creative base. It introduces the delicate and airy works of Machiko Ito, who creates her pieces by knitting bundles of glass fibers with a crochet hook and then firing them; the expressive works of Takeshi Sano, who meticulously composes patterns by cutting and assembling parts before shaping them again by blowing; the intricate color patterns resembling woven fabrics applied by Yoko Sano, who overlays colors multiple times and then shapes them by blowing; and the elegant lines, patterns, and bubbly textures achieved by combining metal foil with glass, drawing on the experience of studying metalwork, by Midori Tsukada.
