The Yamaguchi Center for Arts and Media (YCAM) will host an exhibition featuring a new work by Wendelien van Oldenborgh, one of the leading contemporary artists from the Netherlands.
Van Oldenborgh has created works through video and installation that confront dominant narratives and power structures, including issues of racism, gender, history, and colonialism. In recent years, she has been researching women artists connected to Japan, the Netherlands, and Indonesia. This includes actress and film director Kinuyo Tanaka (1909-1977), who has strong ties to Yamaguchi, and writer Fumiko Hayashi (1903-1951). The exhibition will present a new work based on a script focusing on these artists, along with previous works, and will transform the exhibition space into an installation resembling a dance floor, symbolizing diverse cultures and societies.
Highlighting societal conflicts and personal struggles arising from dominant narratives like colonialism and patriarchy, this exhibition invites viewers to reflect on moral agency in society.
Open on public holiday Tuesday but closed on the following day. Closed during the New Year holidays (December 29 to January 3.) Closed on February 26 and March 6.
