Over the course of about 70 years, Akita-born collector Michio Aburaya has been collecting all kinds of objects related to the everyday lives of ordinary people. These objects carry the traces of the lives of nameless people and the accumulated memories of generations. In this exhibition, we focus on Michio Aburaya’s life as a collector, with the participating artists and researchers using the objects in his collection as starting points for new interpretations and interventions, creating a space where folk tools, art, and archives intersect. Can collected objects be considered art? Our exhibition will open this question.
