An exhibition introducing the changes in women's clothing during the Showa period. Clothing is closely related to changing times as the expression "fashion is a mirror of time" suggests. The drastic social changes of the Showa period were no exception, and had a major impact on women's clothing, shifting from Japanese to Western-style clothing and from home sewing to ready-to-wear.
A scarcity of supplies and the National Spiritual Mobilization Movement of the government during the Sino-Japanese War led to control over clothing as well. During the postwar years, severe shortages continued, and women were unable to afford to enjoy dressing up. During the postwar period, however, when women had more opportunities and status, they began to wear clothing that was more functional. Around 1955, the percentage of women wearing Japanese and Western-style clothing began to reverse in urban areas.
