Yasuhiro Fujiwara Exhibition

Mie Prefectural Art Museum
Finished

Artists

Yasuhiro Fujiwara
The Mie Prefectural Art Museum opened the Yoshitatsu Yanagihara Memorial Museum in 2003 after receiving a donation of works from Yoshitatsu Yanagihara (1910-2004), a leading sculptor in the world of postwar Japanese figurative sculpture. Since then, the museum has been committed to honoring Yanagihara by constantly displaying his works and materials to the public.

In 2019, with the support of the artist's bereaved family, the Y² project was launched as a new project to promote the next generation of artists. This exhibition, the second in the project, will introduce Yasuhiro Fujiwara (b. 1968). Born in Matsusaka City, Mie Prefecture, Fujiwara graduated from an art university in Japan, studied in London, and now lives and works in Iga City, Mie Prefecture.

Based on his interest in "memory" and "in-between," Fujiwara has been depicting mountains and forests that lie between the latent images in our consciousness and the real landscape. For this exhibition, Fujiwara has identified "ridge lines" as the keyword that connects his work with that of Yanagihara. The "ridgelines," which at first glance appear linear but have complex depths, will serve as a knot, and collaboration will unfold. At the exhibition, sculptures by Yanagihara will be exhibited along with Fujiwara's new works.
