The experience of war has left many people in Japan with a deep commitment to peace and a determination never to allow another war or become complicit in one.
Stop the Tank (1972): Murasame Bridge, Yokohama
In the early 1970s, as the Vietnam War intensified, anti-war movements spread across the world. In Japan, protests grew under the call not to be drawn into America's war, leading to actions such as attempts to block the transport of U.S. military tanks. In August 1972, a trailer carrying tanks from the U.S. Army Sagami General Depot to a base at Yokohama Port was brought to a halt just before Murasame Bridge. Citizens and young activists staged a sit-in, arguing that the vehicle exceeded the bridge's weight limit. Although a local incident in Yokohama, it became a powerful symbol of direct civilian action against the U.S. military and had a profound impact across Japan.
Paper Cranes Fill the Skies of New York (1982): The One Million People Rally for Nuclear Disarmament
A decade after the Murasame Bridge Incident, tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union had escalated to the height of the Cold War, raising fears of nuclear conflict. In response, anti-war, anti-nuclear and peace organizations from around the world mobilized. In June 1982, coinciding with the Second United Nations Special Session on Disarmament (SSD II), campaigners gathered in New York for the One Million People Rally for Nuclear Disarmament. In Japan, NGOs including the Japan Confederation of A- and H-Bomb Sufferers Organizations formed a coalition and traveled to New York to take part.
Viewed separately, these two events may appear unrelated. Seen through the broader lens of history, however, they reveal a continuous and enduring aspiration for peace in Japan. Together, they form part of a history that continues to grow and will not be broken.
