Yohta Matsuoka
This exhibition is curated and organized by the free magazine Hidden Champion, known for its coverage of street culture, art, fashion, and photography over the past 20 years.

Yohta Matsuoka, initially known as Jonjon Green, started his career in the live painting scene in Japan in 2004, during the dawn of this movement. Influenced strongly by designer groups of the 80s, he blends vibrant geometric shapes and repeating patterns to create abstract works, leaving behind large murals in numerous locations globally. Transitioning from murals to using canvases as support, he developed a new style, returning to his artistic roots. When the global pandemic in 2020 halted activities worldwide, Matsuoka felt the need to respond to this stagnant and colorless world, initiating the creation of artworks placing "spheres" within still life paintings, following primal instincts.

"Placing some symbolically recognizable objects, anyone can easily identify, created a reaction in that world. Observing the situation from a distance, I could perceive faces in the arrangement of the objects I chose. It was reminiscent of 'Before Dawn,' suggesting that the world, frozen in time and devoid of color, would soon see the sunrise."

Yohta Matsuoka's "Before Dawn" series sets a time axis within still-life paintings, transforming darkness into a gradient that evokes a starry sky, causing the spheres to play with intention. The remnants of an old world gradually take on color, symbolizing a world moving towards a hopeful new day.

In this exhibition, based on the "Before Dawn" series introduced in 2021, Matsuoka will unveil new works combining elements of his roots in graffiti art. By merging his recent artistic style with influences from the culture that inspired him before establishing himself as a professional artist, Matsuoka presents a unique perspective. Through the reinterpretation of traditional Japanese painting compositions infused with street essence, witness Yohta Matsuoka's innovative approach to still life painting.
