Artists

Tatsuhiko Yokoo
Tatsuhiko Yokoo (1928-2015) was a painter based in Japan and Germany who created works of art from the images that welled up from within through meditation.

Born in Fukuoka in 1928, Yokoo spent his youth in Wakamatsu in present-day Kitakyushu. He held a solo exhibition in Geneva, Switzerland, during his stay in Europe for less than a year. After returning to Japan, his fantastic style based on biblical and mythological themes attracted much attention, and he exhibited his works not only in Japan but also in Switzerland, the United States, Germany, Austria, and other countries in Europe.

In 1978, he joined the Rudolf Steiner Society and began Zen training at the Sangun Zen temple in Kamakura, experimenting with a fusion of Western mysticism and Eastern Zen thought. In 1993, he established a studio in Chichibu, Saitama Prefecture, and continued to travel back and forth between Japan and Germany until his later years.

This exhibition traces Yokoo's entire career, displaying his paintings from the Surrealist style of the 1960s to the abstract paintings of his later years, as well as video recordings of his public productions and sculptures of sacred images.
