Yoshiiku and Yoshitoshi: Ukiyo-e Masters at the Dawn of Modernization

Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, Tokyo
Finished

Artists

Yoshiiku Ochiai, Yoshitoshi Tsukioka
Yoshiike Ochiai (1833-1904) and Yoshitoshi Tsukioka (1839-1892) honed their skills under the tutelage of Kuniyoshi Utagawa (1797-1861), one of the leading ukiyo-e artists of the late Edo period, and in 1866-67 they created a series of brutal, bloody pictures together, reflecting the climate at the end of the Edo period.

Although the two artists were rivals and were popular at the time, Ochiai later began to paint newspaper nishiki-e for the Tokyo Nichinichi Shimbun (the predecessor of the Mainichi Shimbun). Tsukioka, on the other hand, developed the warrior pictures he inherited from Utagawa and pioneered ukiyo-e with historical themes.

The two artists, who were both in the middle of their lives at around the age of 30 when the Meiji Restoration took place, are known as the last of the generation of ukiyo-e artists. This exhibition looks back on how they fought against the decline of ukiyo-e by focusing on their valuable personal collections and the Asai Collection.
