The collage drawings, created as instructions for the ongoing social practice project "Ending War on the Other Side of the Earth" (2023–), are drawn on waterproof blue tarps. The text describing the content of the work, along with enlarged images of Emperor Showa, the face and lips of former Prime Minister Fumimaro Konoe who committed suicide by poisoning, and potassium cyanide, are prominently featured. Nearly 80 years after the end of World War II, the generation that experienced the war is dwindling, and the structure of society has significantly changed. Japan has also shifted to welcoming workers and students from the Asian regions once invaded by the Japanese military. This work aims to reconsider the nature of war within the context of global change by having visitors from Asia reenact the Hirohito surrender broadcast. Yoshinori Niwa plans to complete this work in roughly a few years.
This exhibition will showcase these collage drawings, new and recent drawings created in Vienna, and the video work "Selling the Naming Rights of Garbage Mountains, 2014," set in a landfill in Manila, Philippines.
