Yoshiro Ito
Yoshiro Ito was born in Hokkaido in 1965. After graduating from Tokyo University of the Arts graduate school, he founded the architectural design firm Ito Yoshiro Architectural Design Office in 2001, after working at the design organization Amorph and the architectural design firm led by Kiyohiko Dan. Currently, he organizes events through cycling, which is his lifelong work, while working as an architect.

Ito's first participation in an art event was in 2000 in the rural area of Tsumari, Niigata Prefecture, where he participated as an artist in the inaugural edition of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, a contemporary art festival held once every three years. Since the third edition in 2006, he has been planning and proposing the annual TOUR DE TSUMARI cycling event, enjoying the art tour by bicycle while appreciating the beautiful rural landscape, artworks, and architectural works, making the movement itself a theme of the artwork. This event has grown into a large event with over 1,000 applicants every year under Ito's organization.

As an architect, Ito starts his work by measuring and investigating spaces and environments before building structures. He originally used photographs to record these, but he wondered if it was possible to capture all the information in a single image that cannot be analyzed, or if it was possible to record an entire city in a single image. This artistic production began with this hopeful idea.

While studying architecture at Tokyo University of the Arts, the camera and bicycle became the closest things to Ito in his life. The act of "browsing," capturing the city's information all at once, including time, distance, streetscapes, and light, using these three elements, was named by Ito to mean "picking up and looking around."

Long-exposure photographs capturing starry skies and moving subjects encapsulate the passage of time and the movement of subjects in a single frame. Conversely, by mounting a camera on his bicycle and allowing it to move while exposed for a long time, the artwork is created.

Out of the vast number of over a thousand photographs taken containing city information, selected images are chosen through Ito's filters, such as surprise and aesthetic sense, and sublimated into artworks. He says he selects these photographs based on his senses, but there are often differences between his memories of experiencing them while riding his bicycle and the landscapes depicted in the photos. Surprisingly beautiful scenes can sometimes emerge from photographs of unassuming paths.

Although Ito himself has no sentimental consciousness in his photographic method, his artworks, lacking concrete forms due to being out of focus, are easily associated with memories that only the viewer knows. The images, reminiscent of abstract paintings, do not appear deliberate, and the relinquished imagery maintains a delicate balance between perfect harmony and a somewhat aloof distance. We feel a sense of familiarity with Ito's images and are magically led to a place unique to each individual.
