AKIINOUE is pleased to present When the sun sleeps, the moon dances, a solo exhibition by Yuki Nagashima, opening July 12.

Born in Tokyo in 1989, Nagashima holds a graduate degree from Tama Art University. She has participated in artist-in-residence programs both in Japan and abroad, including Zea Mays Printmaking (United States) and Ratamo Printmaking and Photography Centre (Finland). Her work has been acquired by institutions such as the National Taiwan Museum of Fine Arts (Taiwan) and the Jyväskylä Art Museum (Finland), earning acclaim across borders.

Nagashima employs the technique of monotype—a printmaking method believed to have originated in 17th-century Italy, wherein pigment is painted directly onto a plate and transferred onto paper, yielding a single, unrepeatable impression. Layering pigment repeatedly onto a single plate, she gradually builds up and completes each image.
Nagashima’s work offers a multifaceted, poetic gaze into the fragments of a complex and ever-shifting world, imbuing them with new forms and meanings. Rooted in deep contemplation and a finely tuned sensitivity, her work gently pushes the boundaries of conventional printmaking and painting, offering a fresh mode of contemporary expression.

Of the exhibition, the artist shares the following reflection:
“On this planet we call home, life unfolds simultaneously under countless environmental conditions.
Cells divide, synthesize matter, and generate energy—fundamental activities that underpin the world we inhabit each day.
This exhibition, When the sun sleeps, the moon dances, began from a speculation: If the sun were to fall asleep, perhaps in that world, the moon would begin to dance.
I paint as a way of reflecting on the reality that I am alive in this very moment, and that the world I inhabit exists through a continuous chain of miracles. Through painting, I seek to observe the countless phenomena and interpret the world from this vantage point.”

The exhibition features approximately twenty new monotype paintings. Through this singular, unrepeatable technique, each piece offers irrevocable traces and moments of beauty—fragments of memory and the body.
