Artists

Yuki Takagi
Yuki Takagi graduated from Tokyo University of the Arts in 2021, majoring in oil painting and is currently enrolled in the master's program.

Takagi takes an image of an actual scene from another person, constructs a maquette while looking at the image, cuts the image into photographs by applying various kinds of light, and then creates an oil painting. The works, which are cut out and slightly displaced from the real world through multiple processes, have a duality that is both true and false and are also interwoven with unseen and disturbing signs, as well as questions about the reality of time and space. All of this is achieved through Takagi's advanced depiction techniques, giving viewers a mysterious experience of the coexistence of the real and the unreal.

The title of this exhibition comes from Roland Barthes' famous book, "Camera Lucida". Takagi's work can be referred to in terms of the relationship between painting and photography, and her works share many similarities with Barthes' characteristic qualities of photography, such as "fear" and "image. In particular, the essence of photography, the sentence "that-has-been" is the very essence of Takagi's work and awaits further consideration.
