Leica Camera Japan K.K. is pleased to announce an exhibition of photographs taken by one of Hollywood's most famous actors of all time, Yul Brynner, at Leica Gallery Tokyo, Leica Gallery Kyoto, and Leica Professional Store Tokyo.
Yul Brynner is a famous actor of the past who won an Academy Award for his role in "The King and I" and a Tony Award for his stage performance in the same film, and is also known for his roles in films such as "The Ten Commandments" and "Seven in the Wilderness". He was also a passionate photographer with a rare talent for capturing the behind-the-scenes artistry of the Hollywood film industry in the mid-20th century.
Brynner's photographs reveal what an extraordinary vision he had. Influenced by the work of photographic legends Henri Cartier-Bresson and André Kertész, Brynner captured many precious moments with his Leica camera that tell the story of Hollywood in the good old days.
The exhibition, which will be held simultaneously at three venues in Tokyo and Kyoto, will offer viewers a glimpse of personal moments spent with friends who were also stars of the era, such as Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn, Frank Sinatra, Ingrid Bergman, and Sophia Loren as if they were part of that group. The quintessence of Brynner's work is how he captures the essence of the era.
The essence of Brynner's work lies in his empathetic intelligence, which is expressed in both the intimate relationship with his subjects and the artistic aspect of his work. This exhibition celebrates Brynner's talent for photography and his contributions to the photographic world.
The rare works on view in the exhibition will be numbered and available for sale.
