Copycenter Gallery presents an exhibition and performance project by Yuki Shibata. Shibata creates works using clothing and the space surrounding the wearer as a medium, with the act of wearing itself becoming part of the artistic experience. For this exhibition, the artist presents seven new works that focus on the relationship between clothing and the body.
Shibata describes wearing clothes as a process of “bringing down and holding the wearer’s life capacity.” The exhibition explores how the abilities we practice in everyday life can be made present and retained within a space. By allowing these abilities to become something we can observe, the work opens possibilities for new actions and different ways of relating to the world.
The accompanying performance explores one of the exhibition’s central concepts, “the rigor of life,” through a unique choreographic approach developed by two dancers and a musician. For Shibata, rigor means defining the boundaries of life in order to respond fully to the world. It is not only a framework for holding our abilities, but also a way of shaping how we respond to and engage with different situations.
Shibata approaches clothing as “lifewear” (life–clothing), exploring garments not as fashion or costume, but as objects deeply connected to everyday existence. While “wearing” as a form of art experience may be unusual within art history, it offers a familiar way of encountering and understanding a work through daily experience.
