The richly colored majolica ceramics produced by artist Tomo Hirai are bathed in the sunlight and clear air of the Mediterranean Sea. Most of them are made with a reddish-brown base coated with white clay and painted with vivid pigments of red, blue, yellow, and green, onto which patterns are carved. The color called selenium red is particularly striking and can only be achieved with majolica clay coloring. Many of Hirai's motifs are derived from old majolica ceramics.
This exhibition commemorates the 50th year of Hirai's life in Italy. Its displays – 150 works including figures, ceramics, and Tuscan landscapes – show the evolution of his practice there over five decades. It also presents a new work, "Fly, on Golden Wings," which combines a heart and an angel and is Hirai's first installation exhibited in Tokyo. Also on view will be special exhibits by long-time friends such as Sueharu Fukami and Jikinyu Raku, as well as works by five of Hirai's friends from Italy: Masahiko Ichino, Ryuichi Kakurezaki, Nami Takahashi, Takuo Nakamura, and Kazue Wakabayashi.
